Microneedling – Tiny Needles – Big Skin Care Benefits
Microneedling is a minimally invasive skin rejuvenation procedure originally designed for the treatment and reduction of scars. Essentially a collagen induction therapy, microneedling dates back to 1995. Over the last couple of decades, the technology has evolved and the procedure has become a popular and effective anti-aging skin care treatment in addition to significantly improving the appearance of acne scars.
How Microneedling Works
A lot less barbaric than it sounds, microneedling works by using a bunch of tiny needles to make microscopic puncture wounds in the skin. This stimulates the production of collagen, which is the most abundant protein in our bodies. It helps give our skin strength and elasticity, along with replacing dead skin cells. This increased collagen synthesis can provide a variety of skin care benefits including skin tightness, reduced acne scars, improved scar color and filling in wrinkles.
Treatment Advancement
As previously mentioned, the technology of how microneedling treatments are administered has changed. Traditionally, dermatologist and medispa clinicians used a dermaroller, a small tube or ball-like device fitted with tiny, surgical steel needles and a handle when providing treatments.
The dermaroller is also typically used in over the counter, at-home microneedling treatments, although these treatments are not recommended. Without proper training, microneedling can be overdone and end up irritating the skin. Additionally, the needles for home use are typically under 1mm long and not as effective as the longer needles used in professional medical microneedling devices.
The most recent advancement in microneedling is the SkinPen, currently the only Class II, FDA cleared microneedling device available in the U.S. The SkinPen microneedling device causes controlled micro-injuries that stimulate the body’s natural wound healing process. These micro-injuries stimulate the body’s natural healing process and the renewed production of capillaries, collagen, and elastin produce smoother plumper-looking skin.
SkinPen Benefits
The SkinPen offers increased maneuverability, making it possible to treat virtually any area on the body and the needle cartridges are disposable, to ensure sanitation. Needle length is adjustable, so procedures can be custom-tailored to each patient’s needs. This allows the clinician to achieve the proper penetration for different areas in order to get the best results. This is extremely important when treating specific skin concerns such as acne scarring or delicate areas of the face such as the eye area.
The needles in the SkinPen penetrate the skin vertically, as opposed to a dermaroller where the needles penetrate the skin on an angle. The angled needles have the potential to cause tears in the skin, leading to possible side effects and a longer recovery time. The SkinPen minimizes potential skin damage and downtime.
Used in conjunction with other skin care treatments, microneedling can make them more effective. It allows for better penetration of topical skin care products and treatments.
What to Expect
The first thing most people want to know is if microneedling hurts. Everyone’s tolerance is different but yes, there can be mild pain or discomfort. Before beginning the procedure, your clinician will cleanse the area and then apply a numbing agent to relieve any potential discomfort.
The procedure takes just 30-60 minutes, depending on the type of skin condition and the size of the procedure area. For optimal results, multiple sessions may be recommended. Keep in mind, everyone’s skin is different. Your clinician will determine the correct number of treatments needed to achieve your desired results. Treatments should be given 4-6 weeks apart.
