There’s been so much buzz about Coolsculpting, it’s unlikely that you haven’t at least heard of it. Still, you may be wondering how it works and if you’re a good candidate. Coolsculpting isn’t for major weight loss. The procedure is meant to reduce or eliminate those stubborn pockets of fat that are resistant to even the best health and fitness efforts. If this sounds like your struggle, CoolSculpting could be the perfect solution.

The Science of Coolsculpting

The scientific process behind CoolSculpting is called cryolipolysis. Derived from the Greek roots cryo and lysis, cryolipolysis translates to ‘cold-fat-loosening’ which basically describes the process. It involves the controlled application of cooling temperatures of 5 -11 degrees Celsius for the targeted, non-invasive reduction of fat cells.

This cooling application causes subcutaneous fat cells to die without causing any damage to the overlying skin or surrounding tissue. The dead cells are eliminated from the body naturally in the weeks following treatment. Coolsculpting is cleared by the FDA for non-invasive fat reduction and is recognized for its reliable effectiveness and well-documented safety record.

Fat Reduction vs Weight Loss

These are often confused as being the same thing, but they’re not. While the exact time varies, at some point during our teens, the amount of fat cells in our body become a fixed number. Losing or gaining weight will generally decrease or increase the size of those cells but the number of cells will remain the same. Fat reduction involves reducing the number of fat cells. CoolSculpting actually reduces the number of fat cells in treated areas by about 20% to 25%.

Because the fat cells impacted by the procedure are eliminated, they won’t migrate to another area of your body. According to data on file at Zeltiq, the company behind Coolsculpting, there is no change to fat cells in untreated areas.

Are You a Candidate?

While they tend to distribute fat cells throughout the body differently, both men and women can be good candidates for CoolSculpting. It is effective on a variety of areas including the abdomen, flanks, chin, upper arms and inner or outer thighs. These are all common problem areas that are often resistant to diet and exercise. CoolSculpting can reduce the fat cells in these areas, even when all of your fitness and health efforts have failed. It is a great nonsurgical alternative to liposuction with little or no downtime.

What to Expect

Before receiving treatment, you will consult with your physician or medical professional to decide if Coolsculpting is right for you. Once you have been deemed a good candidate and the target area or areas have been determined, you can begin treatment.

Controlled cooling is delivered via an applicator to freeze the targeted fat. You may feel intense cold initially, but this will gradually subside as the targeted area numbs. Most CoolSculpting applicators use a vacuum to draw fatty tissue into the applicator cup, so you may also feel some pulling, tugging, and/or mild discomfort. Many people read, check their email, watch a movie on their mobile device or just sit back and relax.

Depending on the number of areas being treated, the length of your treatment may vary. The latest technology of CoolSculpting can treat a patient in 35-60 minutes. Some providers have multiple CoolSculpting systems and applicators, allowing multiple areas to be treated at the same time. You may feel numbness or itching after treatment which is temporary. With virtually no downtime, you can immediately return to your normal activities. You can even receive treatment on your lunch hour and go right back to work.
