Considering Juvederm? Wondering if You’re a Good Candidate?

You’ve probably heard of Juvederm but may not completely understand what it is and how it works. This can make it difficult to know if Juvederm treatments would be a good option for you. While only your physician, dermatologist or medical esthetician can determine this during a consultation, it’s a good idea to do a little research. This way you know what questions to ask and have a pretty good idea what to expect.

What is Juvederm?

The Juvederm collection of products is a line of injectable dermal fillers. Most dermal fillers, including Juvederm, are made from hyaluronic acid, or HA. A complex sugar that occurs naturally in the human body, HA helps the skin retain moisture and nutrients, thus maintaining its elasticity.

Its natural function is to absorb water, deliver nutrients, and act as a cushioning agent. When injected it into the skin, HA acts like a sponge and expands to fill in wrinkles and folds or support sunken areas.

As we age, the skin’s natural hyaluronic acid declines, resulting in volume loss and wrinkles. Juvederm can help minimize these effects such as moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds. The results typically last nine months to a year.

Various Products

The Juvederm collection includes multiple products, each designed to treat a specific issue or area. Juvederm is intended for use in adults over 21.

JUVEDERM VOLUMA XC – Injected deep into the cheek area, this product is used to treat age-related volume loss. Mid face volume loss is a common effect of aging.

JUVEDERM Ultra Plus XC – Injected into the facial tissue for the treatment of moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds. Commonly used to treat the nasolabial folds (smile lines running from the nose to the corner of the mouth), marionette lines and the lower jowl area.  It can also be used on the lips for patients seeking full, voluptuous lips.

JUVEDERM Ultra XC – A thinner version of Ultra Plus, it is commonly Injected into the lips and perioral area which surrounds the lips. This product is typically used for lip rejuvenation to add fullness and definition.  It can also be used in more superficial wrinkles in the face.

JUVEDERM VOLBELLA XC – The newest product in the line, it is primarily used to smooth and define the lips without adding much volume.  It is especially good at eliminating the fine vertical lip lines above the lip, commonly known as smoker’s creases or bleeding lipstick lines. It has a honey-like consistency and does an amazing job at smoothing and hydrating the lips.

If you are dealing with any of these issues and are looking for a minimally invasive, nonsurgical option, consult with your medical professional to see if Juvederm is right for you. It can also be effective on other aesthetic issues. These include static wrinkles and frown lines, under eye hollowness, marionette lines, chin enhancement, sagging earlobes and hand rejuvenation. Your medical professional will be able to determine which Juvederm product is appropriate for your particular issue.

What to Expect

As previously mentioned, Juvederm products are administered through injection with only minor discomfort. Juvederm Voluma XC, Juvederm XC and Juvederm Ultra XC contain lidocaine to help ease any discomfort you might experience. Juvederm® is administered through injection. Injected into the target site, results of the injection will be immediately obvious.

The length of a treatment session is usually about thirty minutes but can vary depending on each patient’s unique condition and the amount of injections needed. On average results last for nine months and in many cases up to one year.

Following their treatment session, a patient can resume their normal activities. For the first 24 hours after a treatment, however, they should avoid alcohol, the sun, and intensive exercise. Exposure to extreme temperatures should also be avoided for about two weeks following treatment. Your medical professional will provide follow-up instructions to ensure you achieve the desired results from your treatment.
