There are many ways aging can affect our facial appearance. For some individuals, it’s fine lines and wrinkles and for others, it’s those deep hollows that develop under your eyes. These are known as tear troughs. Aging isn’t the only culprit when it comes to tear troughs. Poor hydration, vitamin deficiencies, lack of sleep, and even weight loss can cause your eyes to be lost in shadows of tear troughs. In younger individuals, deep tear troughs can be hereditary and many patients will have a parent or grandparent with the same issue. If you’ve tried everything to reduce their appearance, don’t give up. Tear trough under eye filler can reduce, and in some cases, virtually eliminate those under eye hollows, giving you a more youthful appearance.
What is Tear Trough Under Eye Filler?
It is an injectable under eye treatment used to fill out the area directly below the lower eyelids. The purpose is to reduce or eliminate the hollowness and in others, it is to camouflage the appearance of under eye bags which are the result of excess fat behind the eyelid pushing forward. While there are surgical procedures (blepharoplasty) to achieve this, this is only recommended for those with severe bags under the eye, Most individuals with tear troughs achieve their desired results without going under the knife.
What to Expect During Treatment
Tear trough under eye filler is a noninvasive procedure done right in your medical provider’s office. A dermal filler such as Juvederm Volbella or Voluma, containing hyaluronic acid is injected in between the muscle and skin of the lower eyelid. It can be injected with a needle or a cannula. A cannula has a rounded blunt tip instead of a sharp point. At Vive, we use a cannula to reduce the possibility of piercing a blood vessel. The filler is gently smoothed out to restore volume to the under eye area and reduce or eliminate the appearance of hollow tear troughs.
How Many Injections Are Necessary?
This depends on the depth of an individual’s tear troughs. For those that are less severe, one syringe of filler is typically used and divided between both eyes. Individuals with more severe tear troughs may require a full syringe for each eye. In some patients, prior to correcting the tear trough, mid-face cheek correction may be done first, which in some cases, eliminates the need to inject the tear trough directly.
Is There Downtime?
There is no downtime following tear trough under eye filler injections. You can go right back to work or return to your normal activities. However, there can be a bit of swelling or bruising at the injection site. The use of the cannula helps to minimize bruising which typically dissipates in a week or two. However, if you are getting tear trough injections prior to an important event. You should schedule them well in advance. This way any telltale signs of the treatment are gone.
How Long Does Tear Trough Under Eye Filler Last?
As with most cosmetic treatments, the longevity of the results may vary. In most cases, tear trough injections last at least a year and in some individuals, the results may last longer. In general, tear trough under eye injections outlast many other cosmetic treatments because the area under your eyes doesn’t experience as much movement as other areas of your face, such as your lips, cheeks, or forehead. It takes longer for your body to deplete the filler.
