Renew Your Skin with Exfoliation

If you want smooth, fresh looking skin, washing your face just isn’t enough. To clean away all of the dead skin and debris that’s dulling your look, you need to exfoliate your skin. There is a variety of over-the-counter exfoliation products. However, they aren’t as effective as professional exfoliation. In an effort to achieve professional results, they can easily be overdone, doing more harm than good.

What is Exfoliation?

Our skin naturally renews itself, creating new skin cells in the lower layers before sending them up to the surface. The older skin cells on the surface die and slough off.  Sometimes, especially as we age, we need to help this process along. Exfoliation removes dead skin cells to reveal the new, younger-looking skin below. Exfoliation can provide other skin care benefits as well.

Unclogs Pores

If the dead skin cells aren’t sloughed off, they will clog and seal off your pores, trapping the oil produced by the sebaceous glands. This can lead to whiteheads, blackheads, and breakouts. Regularly exfoliating your skin can prevent these skin care issues from developing.

More Effective Skin Care

If the oil from the sebaceous glands can’t get out when your pores are clogged, then your serums and moisturizers won’t be able to get in and will simply lay on the skin’s surface. When you exfoliate your skin, your skin care products will be able to penetrate the skin and be more effective. Without exfoliation, many of your skin care products will just be a waste of money.

Accelerate Cell Turnover

Getting rid of dead skin cells rather than waiting for them to slough off on their own can speed up the process of cell turnover. This can help to keep your skin smooth and looking its best. When you exfoliate your skin, it also increases circulation. This nourishes the skin’s surface and stimulates collagen production which improves the skin’s integrity.

Types of Exfoliation Treatments

When you have your skin exfoliated by a medical esthetician, there are two different types of treatments – mechanical and chemical. Mechanical treatments such as microdermabrasion or dermaplaning manually rub or scrape the dead skin cells away. Microdermabrasion uses tiny crystals to remove the top layer of skin which is made up mostly of dead skin cells, oil, and dirt.

With dermaplaning, a sterile, medical-grade scalpel is used to gently graze the skin’s surface and remove the top layer of skin. As a bonus, dermaplaning will also remove annoying peach fuzz.

Chemical exfoliation treatments such as chemical peels use acids to break down and remove the barrier of dead skin cells. There are also treatments such as HydraFacial, which is a bit of a hybrid, using water pressure, mechanical exfoliation, glycolic and salicylic acids, and suction to exfoliate your skin.
