PRP and Microneedling Treatments – Benefits for Your Skin and Hair
Have you noticed that your skin and hair are not as healthy as they used to be? Are you wondering if there is a way to improve their health and regain a more youthful appearance? You might want to consider PRP and Microneedling treatments. Used in conjunction with each other, they can provide benefits for both skin and hair.
What are PRP and Microneedling?
PRP (platelet rich plasma) is created by drawing one or two vials of your own blood. It is then processed in a centrifuge to concentrate the platelets. PRP stimulates collagen and elastin production. Microneedling is a collagen induction technique typically performed with a dermaroller or Skinpen containing tiny needles. Those needles create micro-injuries in the outermost layer of your skin. As a healing response, collagen production and blood flow are increased. Existing cells are also stimulated which can accelerate cell division.
When used together, the microneedling is done first to create the micro-injuries. The PRP, rich in growth factors, is applied over top of those. The results of both treatments are greatly enhanced when combined.
PRP and microneedling work together to give your skin a more youthful appearance. The increased blood flow and collagen production stimulated by microneedling can increase the skin’s thickness and firmness. This helps to smooth out and diminish fine lines and wrinkles. The collagen boost also helps improve the overall texture and tone of your skin. Combining a PRP facial with microneedling increases elastin which helps to restore the skin’s elasticity. This reduces the appearance of sagging skin.
However, the benefits of combining PRP and microneedling go beyond just smoothing out wrinkles. These treatments can help reduce the appearance of enlarged pores, uneven skin tone, discoloration, age or sun spots, and acne scars. One of the reasons PRP and microneedling have become such a popular facial treatment is that they are all natural. You aren’t putting anything into your body that doesn’t already exist naturally.
Both men and women can experience emotional distress when faced with hair loss. Hair restoration treatments have been available for years – from topical solutions such as Minoxidil and Rogaine to more invasive procedures like hair plugs and transplants. Despite their displeasure over their hair loss, introducing chemicals into their system or undergoing a surgical procedure is something most people aren’t willing to endure.
PRP and Microneedling can aid in hair restoration while allowing you to avoid toxic or invasive procedures. Both harness the body’s natural healing abilities. The microneedling not only stimulates the body to repair and rejuvenate the skin but can also aid in the regeneration of your hair follicles. Performing microneedling first enables the body to better absorb the growth factors contained in the PRP.
What to Expect
PRP and microneedling are done right in your provider’s office and involve minimal discomfort. A topical numbing solution will be before a microneedling treatment. The procedure lasts only 30-60 minutes, depending on the type of skin condition and the size of the procedure area. For optimal results, multiple sessions may be recommended. Treatments should be given 4-6 weeks apart.
PRP is normally applied directly to the skin during a facial. However, for hair restoration, it is injected directly into the scalp. Again, a topical numbing solution is used and the injection site may be sore for a few days. PRP is often used alone for hair restoration but microneedling can stimulate the growth factors in the scalp, impacting the hair follicles and promoting hair growth.
